| Since the middle of the 1960s, corpus linguistics has come into vogue as a new branch of linguistics. During the past 20 years, corpus linguists have made significant progress. Corpus linguistics has become an important branch of modern linguistics. Corpus linguistics is an interdiscipline incorporating with linguistic analysis, language education, research approach, statistics and information technology etc.; the research subject of corpus linguistics is authentic language data. Researchers use kinds of corpus index tools to retrieve and sort annotated corpus materials. Through investigating the distribution frequency of linguistic data, the researchers may find the rule and pattern of language in real application. Corpus is a set of electronic annotated authentic linguistic materials for different research purposes. Since 1980, corpus linguistics has been used widely in lexicography, language teaching, second language acquisition, dialectology, translation studies, machine translation, HCI inquiry and automatic summarization etc.In recent years, following development of hardware technology of computers and information technology as well as the rapid popularization of the Internet, with internet source and existing hardware technology, it is not impossible for researchers to build special corpus by themselves according to their need. DIY corpus does not only meet researchers' interest, but also is widely used in daily teaching activities or teaching material compilation and multimedia teaching software development. DIY Corpus has become a new research hotspot of domestic corpus construction.As a common means of communication, news discourse is not a transparent medium for communication about an objective world as traditional linguistics has claimed. News English has its special characteristics:social, tendentious, fresh, variable. News English can reflect new characteristics and new changes more accurately and effectively. English news especially hard news materials play a very important role in both English language research and teaching. The thesis is divided into five parts. At first part, the author mainly introduces the research background, including study purpose and mainframe of the thesis; Chapter two is literature review. This chapter focused on previous research on news, corpus and corpus linguistics; Chapter three introduced the process of English Hard News Corpus (hereinafter called "EHNC") construction in detail; Chapter four introduced simple application of DIY small-scale English news corpus in language study and foreign language teaching; the last part is a conclusion to the whole thesis.Small corpora have broad application prospects and strong vitality in predictable linguistic research at present and in future. For limitation of time, money and other factors, the scale of EHNC is not very large and the annotation is not perfect. The author hopes that in the future study, EHNC can be more perfect. |
