The subject of this present paper is"madness", which particularly refers to the way in which novels of the new era take madman or fool as the center of description, or the way novels are narrated from the perspective of a madman or a fool. Madness or a mad image is the character who either is mentally disordered, or talks nonsense, or suffers mental illness of different degrees. They in literary works often function as a prophet who lay bare the secret. The image of a fool, on the other hand, refers to those who are intelligently retarded, ignorant or unreasonable, also often added by the inability to tell what is illusion and what is reality. These two kinds of narrative images can yield both different as well as similar narrative effects. In this paper, I will start with an account of the madness and fool motif in novel both home and abroad through its advent in an attempt to discover the reservation and renovation of madness and fool motif in contemporary Chinese novels as well as the emerging trend under the present linguistic circumstance. Secondly, I will try to account for the emergence of the madness and fool phenomenon both from a social and a literary perspective with the aid of sufficient examples in madness and fool novels. Meanwhile, the image of madness and fool will be categorized separately. Thirdly, I will unravel the intended meanings composited into the madman and fool, particularly their social and aesthetic meaning. Then through the analysis of the narration of the novel, the narrative method and ethics will be appreciated, which involves the construction of meaning, and the effect of alienization and marginalization of the narrative target in order to better appreciate the narrative beauty of madness and fool novels. Last, I will give a summary of the basic narrative features in madness and fool novels of the new era to reveal their significance as well as limitations. I believe that such an approach conducted from this special perspective to the literature of the new era will not only expand the research field of literature, enrich the interpretation of the writers as well as literary works, but also deepen our understanding of the literature in the new era.
