British-Indian writer Rudyard Kipling (1865--1936) was a great litterateur with a dual cultural identity. He had a large amount of literary works with diversity forms and rich themes. He became the first British-Indian writer who received the Nobel Prize in Literature relying on his amazing imaginative power, keen insight, exceptional creativity, majestic narrative style and excellent narrative ability. People preferred to concern colonialism rather than studying the narrative techniques and cultural connotation of his animal stories because of his special identity, "the father of colonial literature". As a result, the process of understanding an animal novel became a mission of finding out the evidences of "white man's burden", such commences would lead readers to misunderstand. In recent years, with the publication of Orientalism and Culture and Imperialism by Edward W. Said and other books, the rise of postcolonial criticism and empire studies caused Kipling goes into the people-to-date perspective once again. Even so, he is still one of the most controversial writers in the history of English literature.A lot of relevant foreign scholars were studying on Rudyard Kipling and his works, either from China or from other countries. Their researches were almost on all aspects including biography, contents and even comments, unfortunately these studies only focused on Rudyard Kipling's colonial of imperialism and his cultural identify instead of understanding the productions themselves. In the domestic, more and more studies of Kipling have been translated, especially for children's literary works, like the Jungle Books. But on the other hand the meaning of "law of the jungle ", the core of this novel, was attracted too much attentions. In fact, more other aspects of the works need to be identified and resolved. The Jungle Books is the most widely spread and the largest impact of Kipling's collection of short stories and all articles for this subject are matter of animals and are close to the actual habits and characteristics of animals. These books embodied the main of Kipling's style and creative ideas. Readers might be able to figure out and leave deep impression as well that animals actually play key roles in this collection, in particularly the wolf child's Mowgli, " the friends of Mowgli's group" and "opposition":the python Kaa with sly and the power; the bears Barlow with quiet and uphold justice, the tiger Sher Khan who is the lame and brutal ravaging and the monkeys which is no Rules for them... These images shaped a complete and realistic jungle world successfully and also they created a certain significance to literature. More than one century, over the boundaries of time and space, Kipling's works have got many children's favorite at home and abroad. The writing style influenced Campbell-style science fiction deeply. Moreover, the impact of this work was even beyond the field of literature. As we known these books were adapted for comics, cartoons, movies and other video works several times; even the image of the monkey was sold around the world as a famous brand of luggage. However, both domestic and international researches on the impact of this works were not enough, lacking of digging the animal images. Therefore, the analysis of animal images in the "the Jungle Books" via text method will has high academic value.The Jungle Books is the most special novel in number of works of Kipling, which ran through the Kipling main writing styles and creative ideas. The unique point of the book is selecting large number of animals as the main characters. It constructed a vivid image of the animal world though numbers of animals. This article was divided into the three chapters. The first chapter introduced the background of Kipling animal stories, including Kipling's life and products. The author would discuss the relationship between Kipling and children in order to find out how it influenced this book. The second chapter focused on analyzing the animal image of the Jungle Books and its cultural connotations. The author would study deeply with the wolf image of the representatives of the protagonist Mowgli, tried to clear up of the cultural origin of the wolf image carefully, and also revealed a variety of novel prototype and symbolism of the wolf image. Around the wolf image, other animal images would be discussed, for instance, the bear, leopard, snake and elephant. More important, the author intended to find out which significant roles they play in the novel. The third chapter focused on the artistic dimension and cultural thought. First, in terms of artistic characteristics, the novel reformed the traditional short stories. It added opening poem to the beginning for increasing the readability of the novel. The materials in the novel were new and courageous. The writer selected the precious animals in the jungles of India as the describe objects. Through the artistic processing, and bravely imagination, the writer made the story twists and turns. Two clues running through the entire collection of stories, which made it concentrated on one point while the forms were loose. Secondly, the misunderstandings of the law of the jungle needed to be clarified. It was on behalf of ideal world in the heart of Rudyard Kipling, also is a utopian. Finally, when the jungle as the utopian in the novel faces to the reality, broken and turned to Heterotopia. Hero Mowgli also found their own Heterotopias, the edge, which is depart from people and wolves.
