The objective of this dissertation is to make a tentative explanation of the producing mechanism of Indirect Speech Act Metonymy in the play Thunderstorm (a classic of a famous Chinese playwright Cao Yu) from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. The existing literature we can find at present is mainly concerning Indirect Speech Act Metonymy from the perspective of the Rhetorical View, the Structuralist View and the Cognitive View. Most of the Chinese Indirect Speech Act Metonymy scholars investigate them about the history, development and classification. Look through the previous literatures, we can find that there are few experts studying Indirect Speech Act Metonymy in the play Thunderstorm and scarce books or papers concerning the theoretical aspects of Indirect Speech Act Metonymy. With regard to cognitive linguistics, almost no scholars take Indirect Speech Act Metonymy in the play Thunderstorm as data or the research target, so in this dissertation, we mainly focus on the producing mechanism of Indirect Speech Act Metonymy in the play Thunderstorm from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. In order to acquire a rational explanation of the producing mechanism of Indirect Speech Act Metonymy in the play Thunderstorm, we adopt the Autonomy-Dependency Analysis Framework of Mr. Xu's as our basis of theoretical framework. The reasoning way we put in this dissertation is text analyzing and holistic way, the result we obtain is tentative.By applying the Autonomy-Dependency Analysis Framework of Mr. Xu's to present our dissertation, we can get the possible process of the producing mechanism of Indirect Speech Act Metonymy in the play Thunderstorm as follows:(1) Establish intentional content and intentional attitude alignment;(2) Establish autonomy elements and dependent elements;(3) Form the corresponding relation of autonomy and dependency based on proximity and similarity, then derive the speakers' corresponding expression and construct into the expression of Indirect Speech Act Metonymy. In conclusion, the main significance of this dissertation is not to introduce the phenomena of the Indirect Speech Act Metonymy in the play Thunderstorm, but to make a tentative explanation of the producing mechanism of Indirect Speech Act Metonymy. It is also the application of the theory of cognitive linguistics to a new language phenomenon. Besides, there are also some limitations in this dissertation, i.e. Abductive reasoning, the way to give a tentative explanation to the already happened events, so it needs to be examined further, our present research mainly concentrates on the data of Indirect Speech Act Metonymy in the play Thunderstorm, so whether the mechanism we get from the analysis can apply to other linguistics phenomena and other types of Indirect Speech Act Metonymy needs to be examined in the future.
