In Mrs Dalloway, British woman novelist Virginia Woolf depicted a single day of the heroine—Mrs Dalloway. The day started from the preparations for a party and ended up with the party. Mrs Dalloway is a character who exists in other books of Woolf. Through Woolf's consistent descriptions, Mrs Dalloway's negotiating between her private self and the social self can be observed. She successfully played her role as an upper class lady, while at the same time, the troubles that she was facing were revealed. Hence, Woolf's feminist strategies can be traced through exploring Mrs Dalloway the character.American modern novelist Michael Cunningham won his Pulitzer Prize by The Hours in 1999. In this novel, he created an intertextual Mrs Dalloway in modern times, reasonably imagined Woolf's mental status during writing Mrs Dalloway and before her suicide, and examined the female reading experience of Mrs Dalloway through the housewife Laura's reading. In this way, he illustrated that no matter how time changes, the troubles that trap women in remain the same.This essay will first construct a full picture of Mrs Dalloway through the intertextual research on the intertextual image of her in Woolf's books. Then, the essay will uncover Cunningham's further development of Woolf's feminist strategies through intertextual reading of The Hours and Mrs Dalloway.
