The teaching of listening and speaking had always been ignored for a long time in the past. But now with the development of the society, it has been paid attention gradually in recent years. College English Curriculum Requirements published in 2007 especially emphasizes the cultivation of listening, speaking and communicative abilities. The cultivation of those abilities is closely related to the teaching approach and the textbooks. Therefore, it's necessary to have a good teaching approach and good textbooks for students to improve their listening and speaking ability.Taking account of the objective of the listening and speaking course and the principles of CLT, this research, firstly, supposes CLT is an appropriate teaching approach for listening and speaking course, and then proves whether it's appropriate with the quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis. Later, based on the result of the study on the teaching approach, the research tries to put forward some principles about listening and speaking textbook compilation. The research intends to answer the following questions:1. From the perspective of students and teachers, is CLT an appropriate teaching approach for the teaching of listening and speaking?2. Are students satisfied with the listening and speaking textbooks they are using? What are their feedbacks?3. What do students need in learning College English?4. Based on the needs analysis, what principles should textbook compilers have in mind when compiling listening and speaking textbooks? The research involves quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis. The first question is answered with both quantitative and qualitative data. The second question is answered with the internal evaluation and the external evaluation (quantitative analysis). The research selects three sets of widely-used college English listening and speaking textbooks as subjects. They are: New Horizon College English: Listening and Speaking, College English: Listening and Speaking (New Edition), New Century College English: Listening and Speaking. The third question is also answered with the data of quantitative and qualitative study. And the last question is answered based on the results of the first three questions. The research comes up with the following results:1. CLT is an appropriate teaching approach for the listening and speaking course. It's necessary for students and teachers to have listening and speaking textbooks based on CLT.2. According to students, the amount of materials in these books is appropriate. In addition, the materials are authentic, which can help students improve their listening ability to some extent. However, some problems exist in the books. A lot of materials in the books are too outdated to provoke students'interest. And there are more formal languages than those of informal in the books. What's more, the listening materials are lack of background noise, and speakers speak in an unreal and unnatural way.3. Students are interested in all kinds of topics, but overall what they are most interested are those related to their daily life, family life, hot issues and entertainment. Second, they like topics of all kinds of genres, but movie clips and dialogues, which are more informal, can attract their attention the most. Third, most students hope to have basic pronunciation practices in the listening and speaking textbooks. Fourth, authentic materials are preferred by most students. Fifth, most students think listening tasks and speaking tasks should be put together rather than set them in different parts, and the tasks should be closer to their real life.4. The following principles should be taken into account when CLT-based textbooks are compiled:1) using authentic materials;2) using materials close to students'daily life;3) using video materials;4) keeping up with the times;5) designing pronunciation practices based on CLT;6) designing tasks with communicative function. In general, this research may promote the reform of college English listening and speaking textbook compilation based on students'needs, encourage teachers to adopt CLT to teach listening and speaking course effectively, and really improve students'communicative abilities.
