Metonymy has traditionally been viewed as a rhetorical device and the function of metonymy is mainly limited to strengthen the expressive effect of language. Since the 1980s, George Lakoff and some other cognitive linguists have argued that metonymy, like metaphor, is a peculiar way of thinking and conceptual in nature. With the development of metonymy study, some scholars, both abroad and at home, have dealt with metonymy as a conceptual phenomenon. But there is a lack of research of combining metonymy with the ideational function of language. This thesis integrates metonymy and the ideational function of language to analyze the examples taken from Lu Hsun's short stories. In light of the theory of the ideational function, this thesis classifies the examples, and then uses the theory of metonymy to discuss them in order to explore the function of metonymy in the narrative fictions and explain the relationship between metonymy and the ideational function. From the analysis, it has been found that metonymy plays an important role in the construction and comprehension of narrative fictions, and as a mode of thinking, metonymy offers a cognitive method to the study of the ideational function of language, and metonymy will deepen and broaden the linguistic expressions of ideational function of language.
