Toni Morrison is one of the most brilliant writers on the literary stage in contemporary America. Her literary creation is deeply rooted in the unique African American history and real life, which pushes African American fiction to new height in contents and narrative techniques. In 1993,Toni Morrison won the Nobel Prize for literature. So far she is the author of nine novels, and The Bluest Eye is her debut novel which tells a tragic story of a black girl's lost soul under the influence of the white dominant culture.By probing into the themes, characters and culture in The Bluest Eye,this thesis tries to explore the application of spatial narrative technique to the novel. The first part is the introduction of the narrative method—the spatial narrative. Chapter Two focuses on the attitudes and values of characters by analyzing the specific topographical spatial scenes. The third part focuses on the harsh reality that black people fail to find the meaning of existence in the white society from the perspective of social space. The forth part studies the psychological process of the black people from admiration for white to self-hatred in a distorted cultural atmosphere in light of psychological space. The last chapter discusses the literary techniques such as multiple narrative points of view, unique structures and symbols, which enrich the content effectively and deepen the theme of the novel, and thus reflect the characteristic of textual space.
