Idioms are a particular part of languages which are used by people for a long time with specific structures. Idioms are important in every language system. Recent years, with the development of Translation theories, the aspect of understanding the problems of Chinese-English translation of idioms, the view of analyzing the meaning and structure of the translations of Chinese idioms are all becoming more and more valuable from any rate.The essay begins with a literature review to observe the definition, qualifications and features of Chinese idioms. With the position of Translation theories, the following part discusses the applications of Translation theories to use in the process of translating Chinese idioms into English. In this part, Nida's Dynamic Equivalence theory, Toury's Target text-oriented theory and Venuti's Domestication and Foreignization theory will be discussed. Translation theories will help us to know better about the regularities of the translation practices. Then in order to examine how and to what extent translation theories can be achieved during the translation process, the idioms in Fortress Besieged have been chosen as the data collection. According to the statistics, more than three hundred idioms have been found and some of them have been used to elaborate the methods during the translation procedure. Some of the translation methods such as literal translation, free translation, Paraphrasing and omission have been considered. Suggestions and ideas about some translations have been raised as well.The essay is willing to seek to improve the study of Chinese idioms, and hoping to offer a new point of view by observing the translation process in a translation theories way. The essay is also embracing to help the teaching and practicing of linguistic, translation studies and the study of teaching Chinese as a second language.
