A Study On The Feminism In The Joy Luck Club

Amy Tan is a well known Chinese American woman writer. Her first novel The Joy Luck Club was well received by the readers and critics as soon as it was published. The novel describes four women with different characters and fates to immigrate to the USA when facing the disasters of the country and their life and it also covers the growing experience of four daughters of the four women. This paper focuses on this novel and analyzes it from the perspectives of women as real protagonists, women as narrators, women's silence breaking and the awakening of feminism.Through the study, the author finds that the novel mainly tells the story of women rather than men who are invisible or incompetent in the novel; all the stories are told by mothers or daughters instead of men who keep silent and have no right to speak; the mothers lived in a backward China while the daughters lived in a modern America, and it seems that the two group bear great difference. True as it is, all of them are under the control of patriarchy. To show their awakening, the mothers chose to leave home to America and daughters chose to break the fetters of their marriages.Amy Tan expresses her feminist ideas through the vivid description of the life between mothers and daughters and makes contribution to feminist literature as well as the Chinese American literature.
