China is an ancient country and has a splendid ancient civilization. China is one of the few countries without culture gap. Any nation is unique. This uniqueness makes it different from other nations, and is the basis of not only the strength of their cohesion but also national presence, inheritance and development. A variety of uniqueness formed the nation's culture. The nation's culture is primarily reflected in architecture. Architecture has an important position in the culture. Furniture, as the important extension and deepening of building function, is closely interconnected with the architecture. Chinese ancient architecture is mainly the architecture of traditional wooden structure. Lots of tenon and mortise joints in the traditional wooden structure building make Chinese ancient architecture different. These characteristics are reflected in the ancient Chinese furniture also. Chinese furniture with tenon and mortise joint embodies many cultural elements of Chinese civilization in addition to its great economic value.Chinese furniture with tenon and mortise joint is an important part of Chinese traditional culture. Ming-style furniture has reached the highest level of production and design of Chinese furniture. As a representative of Chinese traditional furniture, Ming-style furniture has features such as high degree of beauty, high-grade materials, and sophisticated technology. Qing-style furniture improved in terms of quantity and production technology because of aesthetic needs of the ruling class. However with a high degree of reduction of aesthetic, the art level of Qing-style furniture has been greatly reduced. To do a good job, one must first sharpen one's tools. Without a good tool, it is difficult to produce good furniture. Even a few skilled carpenter can produce, it is still difficult to form the mainstream and does not have an important impact on culture. To make the furniture we need a variety of tools and equipment. Wood plane as the core tool has an irreplaceable position. In all the traditional woodworking tool plane has the most complex structure, the most types, the highest technical requirements and is the most time-consuming tool in the production process. As a result of Chinese unique values and aesthetics, unique hardwood furniture represented by rosewood furniture and scented rosewood furniture appeared in ancient China. With the emergence, development and maturity of Chinese hardwood furniture Chinese wood plane itself is constantly evolving. Eventually it became the unique Chinese woodworking tools which was very different from European-style iron plane and Taiwan-style plane.Which came first, the Chinese furniture with tenon and mortise joint or the traditional wood plane? The discussion about this question is about as boring as the classic quiz:which came first, the chicken or the egg? We can only say that the appearance of wood plane leads the hardwood furniture with tenon and mortise joint to prosper; the requirements of hardwood furniture with tenon and mortise joint result in the emergence of the wood plane. They develop together, promote and restrict each other. The Chinese furniture with tenon and mortise joint became mainstream in the Ming and Qing dynasties and the appearance, improvement and consummation of wood plane played a decisive role in this process.Starting from the year of 1840, China entered a century of dark ages. Not only that the science and technology of China fell far behind the western powers, and the Chinese themselves began to show doubts of the traditional culture and further slandered and discarded it. Therefore the development of Chinese furniture has also stagnated. During the Cultural Revolution decade, various treasures including a large number of furniture have been burned. Since initiating the reform and opening-up policy, the Chinese people came into contact with many previously unimaginable things and suffered inevitably a huge mental shock. By the force of the wholesale westernization, the tenon and mortise joint furniture faded out of sight. The high cost of production of the tenon and mortise joint furniture together with the small living area and other factors finally led into the total disappearance of the tenon and mortise joint furniture from people's lives. Along with the old carpenter's death or retirement in China's cities and villages the tools of making traditional Chinese furniture also lost its place to display. The wood plane turned from utility into decorations and collectibles, and its use range shrunk to a very small area which consisted of woodworking enthusiasts, colleges, and research institutions. Now due to the combined effect of the various social reasons, furniture material and the aesthetic standards, the traditional furniture is undergoing an increasing decline. And the wood plane has also gradually fad out of sight. The traditional Chinese wood plane, despite many advantages, has some flaws and the complexity of handling is especially prohibitive. The difficulty to master the way of putting strength and the hardness to control the depth of the plane blade are its two largest defects. These are not a big deal for skilled carpenters but a huge challenge for those woodworking enthusiasts or students at school. This group of people has no experience at all but is becoming the main user of the wood plane. For modern furniture production, the popularity of electric tools is undoubtedly an enormous contribution to processing efficiency and cost reduction, but it plays a destructive role regarding the production of traditional hardwood furniture. Although having a huge advantage in cutting, sawing, polishing and grinding, the electric tools have no merits to speak of in making tenon and mortise joint, especially as for the more complex structure. To make the wood plane a tool most people may use, it is unwise to develop the skills, but it is more practical to lower the threshold of requirements according to its specific use. Therefore, the restructuring is becoming a must. Through the analysis of the main structural features and advantages and disadvantages of the world's major wood plane, the purpose of this paper is to find out the elements that can enhance the easiness degree to use the wood plane, and hence improve the traditional Chinese wood plane. Through lowering the using threshold and expanding the user group, relative to other methods, improving traditional Chinese wood plane is undoubtedly the most efficient and economical solution. It will make contribution to the development of traditional Chinese furniture.
