The question, whether language is "arbitrary" or "iconicity" is deeply rooted in the history of language studies. It can be traced back to the period of Plato and Aristotle. In modern times, studies on iconicity become more and more popular.This paper aims to discuss the multi-dimensional cognitive representation of iconicity in linguistic symbols in both English and Chinese, and this paper will be divided into five parts:the first part, discusses the representation of iconicity in phonemic-meaning aspect, in this part the representation of iconicity in phonemic-meaning aspect in English and Chinese will be discussed separately:they are the onomatopoeia aspect and the vocabulary aspect, used to illustrate the iconicity characteristics in language; in the second part, the illustration is made in the iconicity representation in morphological part in English and in Chinese separately from the compounds, the word groups and other morphological aspects in both English and Chinese to illustrate it; the third part deals with the representation of iconicity in syntax in both English and Chinese, in this part three kinds of syntax iconicity principles will be introduced; in the fourth part, I will illustrate the application of iconicity in English teaching; and the final part is the concluding part.
