As an important communicative function, listening is one of the important ways of language input. By plenty of listening activities, learners have access to a great deal of language input, gradually take in the language and its rules, and thus improve their language communicative competence. Listening plays an important role in English teaching and should be strengthened in line with the theories of language learning or the rules of language teaching. However, in practice linguistic knowledge was valued more than linguistic competence and little attention was given to the teaching of listening. The present situation of listening teaching in five-year teachers' colleges is depressing and there exist a lot of problems, such as inefficient teaching methods, poor matriculate quality, inappropriate teaching materials and shortage of qualified teachers. In order to change the situation, an empirical study has been made on the application of original films in the teaching of English listening at Yunhe Teachers' College, based on the results of interviews and questionnaires. Though the experiment fails to achieve the desired results due to inadequate preparations and many other factors, the application of original films in the teaching of English listening is found to be very helpful in improving students' listening ability.This thesis consists of five parts. The first chapter introduces the research background, research purpose, and research methods, defines related concepts and offers the framework of the thesis. Chapter Two presents the theoretical basis and analyses the current research findings both at home and abroad. Chapter Three is the research design of the application of origin films in the teaching of English listening at Yunhe Teachers' College, including the objectives, the subjects, the materials, the variables and hypothesis and instruments of study. Chapter Four, as the main part of the thesis, introduces in detail the process of the empirical research, including preparation stage, experiment stage as well as the result analysis. Chapter Five is the conclusion of the study. The study shows that it is feasible to apply original films in the teaching of English listening and if proper procedures are adopted, good results can be expected for the students at five-year teachers' colleges. It is also suggested that when applying original films in the teaching of English listening, the teachers should carefully select the aural materials, strengthen strategy training and adopt diverse teaching methods.
