The process of urbanization of the Meiji era is an important stage in the whole process. It can be divided into two periods approximately. The first period, is the preparation stage of the urbanrization.The transform from feudal city to modern city is the main character of this stage.And the Government of Meiji Japan play a vital role in this transformation.In the 1890s,after the onset of the Industrial Revolution,the urbanrization has entered its second stage,in which stage did Japan achieve a preliminary success in the industrialization.It has become obvious that economy is the majoy factor of city's function.By a high degree of division of labor,Japan formed into three metropolitan areas——Tokyo—Yokohama area,Osaka—Kobe area and Kitakyushu area.The industrialization is the main impetus of the urbanization at the time.The process of urbanization of the Meiji era has great influrence on Japanese society and economy.It has promoted the industrialization,increased the level of commercialization of agriculture,changed the relationship between urban and rural.Meanwhile,the various policies of Meiji government such as household registration policy and urban planning have been inherited and developed by the successive governments.Although some problems occurred during this period,the experience of Japan still has a certain reference for China.
