Discourse markers have been quite phenomena in daily communications, whose research is of great theoretical and practical significance.Upon literature review, we have found that coherence theory and relevance theory play an important role in the discourse markers in the light of pragmatic function. On the one hand, the coherence theory just observes the semantic features of the discourse markers and the coherent relations within the discourse itself, but not some of the important problems by scholars in the field of coherence theory. Some of the problems go like this: how discourse markers relate with the context and the discourse; how discourse markers affect and guide the comprehension of the discourse; what the cognitive psychology theory which appears in the discourse markers is? On the other hand, the relevance theory is to further reasonable and plausible explanations to the problems above, and offering helpful evidences and feasible solutions to the various controversial problems .Thus, the thesis expounds that the relevance theory has brought about strong explanations to the coherent function of the discourse markers.Based on the research were, with the data from an examination of 40 public speeches, the thesis carries out an investigation of pragmatic markers on the basis of their different categories, aiming at exploring the functions and the features of applying the pragmatic markers in public speeches and the strategies employed in the process of political speeches. The thesis has introduced the discourse markers in the new field of political speeches, and hopefully will do a bit to the further research on the discourse markers.
