Tony Morrison was the first famous African-American woman writer who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1993. She was regarded as one of the most outstanding novelists in the world. Her novels are known for their epic themes, vivid dialogue, and richly detailed characters. Her first novel The Bluest Eye was discussed from different perspectives of cultural hegemony, post-colonial theory , feminism, new historicism and writing techniques, few has been done from subject consciousness. This thesis attempts to analyze the loss of the black's subject consciousness under the impact of the white culture. This thesis consists of five parts.Introduction is about the general information of the writer Tony Morrison and a survey of her works covering Tony Morrison'writing techniques , brief introduction of the novel The Bluest Eye and literary review of the novel. Meanwhile, the purpose of this thesis is also stated.Chapter one is concerned about the loss of black community's subjective consciousness. Under the impact the white culture, the black community spurned their own aesthetic value and lost the sense of responsibility.Chapter two is about the loss of family's subjective consciousness. Because of the culture shock and long-term depression, Cholly lost the sense of family responsibility and ethical morality. Meanwhile Pauline and Geraldine neglected their responsibility as wife and mother.Chapter three discusses the loss of individual subjective consciousness. Facing the oppression and discrimination, many blacks chose to give up their subjective consciousness . Pecola longed for the bluest eyes to win others'respect and love but lost herself . At the same time , Junior lost his kindness and Soaphead lost his sincerity. All of these became the source of the misfortune.Conclusion is a summary of the thesis. Through the analysis of the loss of black's subjective consciousness, the thesis concludes the root of their tragedy. In order to seek liberty and independence, the blacks must accept their own culture and civilization. In that case , they can regain the confidence of the nation and get others'respect and happiness.
