A Pragmatics Analysis Of Hedges In The Big Bang Theory

As a kind of language intrinsic attributes, fuzzy language has been indispensiabley applied in daily communication. It can not only modify language fuzziness and can also play a role of language strategy to improve the expression and flexibility of language, so as to realize the effective communication. Hedges, as the main part of the essence of fuzzy language has attracts attention of a variety of scholars including semantics, pragmatics, chapter learn, discourse analysis, the thesis set out from the semantics and pragmatics perspectives, regarding the popular American indoor situation comedy of the Big Bang Theory hedges as corpus, analyzed the hedges in daily communication with the interpersonal function.In recent years, watching popular situation comedy has become the new situation of the current entertainment, especially in the young audience in our country. This article from the classification principle of hedges for standard corpus, and in the collection of the cooperative principle and politeness principle theory framework of hedges in our daily communication function and the use of specific pragmatic analysis, found that the use of hedges can pave the way for ccompletion of communication in various context.The thesis is composed of five chapters. In chapter 1, the detailed introduction of the background, significance and research questions will be presented. Chapter 2 is the review of study on hedges and pragmatics function from the perspective of different definitions and classifications. Furthermore, the further analysis on pragmatics on hedges is followed to emphasize the orientation of the thesis. Chapter 3 is concerned with the issue of how to process and analyze the sample collected in the big bang. Chapter 4 is the core of the entire thesis, which shows a detailed and thorough analysis and discussion of the hedges from the pragmatic perspective. Hedges will be explained with the support of cooperative principle and politeness principle respectively. In addition, the vivid description and analysis will be given about what role the hedges have played in the big bang.Through the analysis on the corpus this article found that the proper use of hedges can play the interpersonal role to avoid conflicts, express politeness, promote objectivity, so that daily communication could go well in addition, in the classroom teaching to the appropriate use of hedges can enhance the students' communicative competence, therefore, this paper is very meaningful to both English teaching and English learners.
