In this thesis, systemic functional approach is taken to discursive patterning of spatial semantics, which accordingly is derived out of spatial experience in text. Transitivity system models the stock of human experience into different processes, and participants of the process as well as circumstances associated with are further studied. Thus, spatial experience is construed into a clausal configuration of process, participant and circumstance in reference to SFG.Spatial semantics is not specified for its own sake in SFG, which is construed more often than not as circumstance, realized mainly by prepositional groups, or in seldom cases as processes, realized by verbal groups. Therefore, prepositional and verbal groups serve as primary lexicogrammatical resources for semantic construal of space and spatial experience modeling. Consequently, spatial semantics is patterned in the guise of spatial experience into text, through the system of transitivity. This thesis takes description and narrative modes of text as research targets, and based on experiential analysis and semantic construal of spatial experience, discursive patterning is systematically examined in reference to relevant cognitive semantic researches. In this thesis, linguistic background for spatial semantics is summarized, out of which traditional decomposition of the semantic domain of space is systematically reviewed, and in regards to dictionary definitions, the basic framework of the semantic domain of space is provided. Literature reviews is implemented from two perspectives, namely the systemic functional and the cognitive linguistic, and feasibility of integrated studies is specified. This thesis studies the clausal configuration of process, participant and circumstance, by which spatial experience is modeled into text. In reference to cognitive semantic researches, theoretical frameworks are compared in pursuit of intrinsic consistency in between. Studies are implemented from two aspects: experiential analysis and semantic construal. Firstly, experiential analysis is carried out to sample texts of description and narrative modes of text, and similarities and disparities thereof are discussed. Secondly, spatial experience is located and derived out for further semantic construal and analysis. The present study shows that the discursive patterning within the previous framework of transitivity is far from accuracy and thus further semantic construal via categorization is to be further implemented. Within the parameters of orientation and non-orientation, this thesis enriches the original framework, which is insightful for discursive comprehension and second language learning.
