For overseas students who learn Chinese, vocabulary always throughout their whole learning process. And vocabulary size is an important symbol to measure their Chinese level. Throughout Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, vocabulary teaching has always been paid a lot of attention. So it's obviously that vocabulary teaching occupies a crucial position in the second language learning and teaching. In1990, Nation divided vocabularies into receptive vocabularies and productive vocabularies. He pointed that receptive vocabularies are the vocabularies which second language learners can understand in listening and reading. Productive vocabularies are the vocabularies which second language learners can use in speaking and writing.The concepts of receptive vocabulary and productive vocabulary which put forward by Nation have broadened the research direction for many linguistic experts and scholars. Then the domestic and foreign experts carried out a series of relative studies in the second language field. At present, it emerged many articles, books about receptive and productive vocabularies of second language learners both at home and abroad. It helps a lot for overseas language teaching. However, researches on the Chinese as a second language are not very rich (Xiaohui Wang,2010). Domestic scholars have mostly concentrated in the acquisition mode and "Fossilization" phenomenon of productive vocabularies, but rarely involve empirical researches on receptive vocabularies and productive vocabularies of overseas students in different level. In addition, previous studies mostly take The Syllabus of Chinese Vocabulary and Character Grade (old version) as a inference. But Han Ban issued The Graded Chinese Syllables, Characters and Words for the Application of Teaching Chinese to the Speakers of Other Languages (new version) in2010. So the conclusions of previous studies may not be able to adapt to the requirements of the new syllabus. Those enlightened new research ideas to the author.This paper investigated the receptive and productive vocabulary size on each vocabulary grade of the beginning, middle and senior level students by experiment. It's been divided into five chapters.Chapter â…  introduced the theory of Nation generally and put forward the issues that this paper will explore.Chapter â…¡ sorted out previous studies and summarized their features. Then put forward the significance of this paper. Chapter III introduced the research methods which included the logic, design, objects and materials of the experiment. Then counted the experimental data and concluded.Chapter IV discussed how to effectively enrich the receptive and productive vocabulary size for overseas students by curriculum, teaching materials and teaching arrangements based on the experimental data.Chapter V concluded the whole paper and pointed out the shortcomings.
