Guided with World Expo2010Shanghai China Theme Content Guide issued by Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination, this thesis studies the effectiveness of intercultural communication of the national pavilion themes at Expo2010, taking fifteen national pavilion themes as examples.The primary research question is whether each national pavilion theme achieves to the effectiveness of intercultural communication. Documentary study and questionnaire survey were employed in this research. The related literature and background information about national pavilion themes were collected from the Expo2010Shang China Pavilion Archive official website and the online databases of foreign embassies in China. Two hundred and five questionnaires were distributed to participants from many Chinese colleges and universities. The total number of valid questionnaires used in this study was167, or81.5percent. It provided supportive data for analyses on the effectiveness of intercultural communication of the national pavilion themes. Quantitative and qualitative methods were taken to treat data. The effectiveness of intercultural communication of15national pavilion themes was studied in the thesis. Three conclusions are made. Almost all national pavilion themes are around the main theme of Expo2010. The participating countries display its own cultural features to the full extent based on their background on the platform of Expo2010. Besides, the pavilion themes are promotional words, which greatly help the participating country build a good public image.At last, the author emphasizes the paramount importance of choosing an appropriate theme for effective intercultural communication, especially at international publicity activities. Suggestions on how to choose the appropriate themes and expressions are provided. Because of limitations of this study, recommendations on further study on pavilion themes are made.
