Based on the theories about noticing and attention, the author coined the notion of"Noticed Input" for highlighting their important role in input, especially when learningthe second adjective-noun collocations. Then an empirical study followed in hoping totestify the efficiency of noticed input in learning of adjective-noun collocations. The study examines how60Chinese learners of mathematics majors at twodifferent English proficiency levels (medium and higher levels) acquiring two types ofadjective-noun collocations (the polysemous, and deverbal participial adjective-nouncollocations) both from receptive and productive aspects. Evidence for the developmentof adjective-noun collocational knowledge is sought in comparing the receptive andproductive mastery of the two types of adjective-noun collocational knowledge acrossand within language proficiency levels. The statistical techniques employed for analysisare Independent-Sample T test and ANOVA.Through the interpretation of the quantitative and qualitative results, the test resultsshow that the experimental group performed excellent in every part when comparedwith control group, such as the production of the target items of collocations, judgingwhether the collocations are appropriate or not, the mastery of the using of deverbalparticipial adjective-noun collocations and so on. As to the performance on the simplecollocations, the control group and experimental group show no significance different. In this study, it is found the interaction between the Noticed Input and proficiency level, but not between Noticed Input and complexity. The reason, put up by the author fromthe input aspect, includes the degree of the processing, the quantity of the information, the limited attention resources and the selectivity of attention.Noticed Input will strengthen the memory the L2collocations, deeply understandthe rules of collocates and usage, which will help native-like and native-fluency of L2production. However, the effect of Noticed Input will be influenced by learners'proficiency level.
