Poetry translation is an important part in literary translation. In the past, no matter whether in a macro view which focuses on translation theories or in a micro view which focuses on translation practice, translators often don't satisfy neither of the two aspects. Considering the difficulty in keeping the balance of theory and practice, the writer aims at solving this problem by using Zheng Hailing's Harmony Theory on Translation, which will help translators find a proper point. This point can both manipulate the original work in a macro view as a theory and have practical principles which are used to guide the translation practice as a specific method. That is to say, in the process of translating, we'd better watch the whole translation in a macro view at the same time translate it from the specific part in order to modulate all the elements dynamically so as to achieve the pursuit of harmony in poetry translation. In order to prove its function, the writer tries to use a specific case study, Ezra Pound's The River-Merchant's Wife:A Letter (a translation of Li Po's 《长干行》) to illustrate the abstract Harmony Theory. It is a typical method of demonstration by analyzing an example. This thesis has five parts:in the first part, the writer aims at introducing the purpose, significance and organization of this thesis; in the second part, focusing on the theory, the writer systematically introduces the development of translation theory and Harmony Theory in literary translation and then the writer defines Harmony Theory in Poetry Translation, which demands the combination of macro and micro view and harmony between faithfulness and beauty in translation; in the third part, the writer introduces Pound and his translation work of Cathay briefly and then focuses on the introduction of Li Po's《长干行》and Pound's translation; in the fourth part, with Pound's translation, Harmony Theory in Poetry Translation is put into practice to analyze the theory; in the last part, it is a conclusion of the whole thesis, the application of the theory on the other aspects of literature translation and some and suggestions about Harmony Theory. After a careful study, readers may easily follow the idea that Harmony Theory can be a standard of poetry translation. As a guide both in theory and practice, it has great significance and enlightenment to other literary translation studies.
