South Korea is geographically close to ASEAN. However, South Korea and ASEAN didn't establish dialectic relationship until 1989. Since the establishment of the dialectic relationship, South Korea and ASEAN promoted the dialectic relationship to comprehensive cooperative partnership. After president Lee Myung-bak came to power, the two sides decided to enhance comprehensive partnership to strategic cooperation partnership.In the background of the global financial crisis, Asia's rising status and good relationship between heads of government Lee Myung-bak government has increased the ASEAN's diplomatic efforts:enhanced the level of cooperation with Vietnam Cambodia Thailand and other ASEAN countries by visiting these countries, strengthen the multilateral diplomatic consultations with ASEAN by South Korea-ASEAN summit and the ASEAN" 10+3"summit as a platform. Lee Myung-bak government strengthens on diplomatic relations with ASEAN have many considerations:promoting economic development, improving the international status as well as handling the global issues.The actions that South Korea has taken to strengthen the diplomatic relations with ASEAN had a great influence on both sides. South Korea has reached the target of promoting the economic development and improving the international status. ASEAN also won some beneficial development in this process. The gap of the economic development among the members of ASEAN has narrowed and the international status has improved. In view of the importance of ASEAN, South Korea will continue the foreign policy to ASEAN. But at the same time the historical problem, ASEAN countries'stability of political and opening problem of sensitive market will affect the development of the diplomatic relations between South Korea and ASEAN.
