Since China's Education Reform and Program identified and stressed that China's elementary and high schools need to have their own unique charactwerictics in 1993, the educational departments and educational theory fields have begun to emphasize the concept of building, flourishing and strengthening characerictic schools. Developing schools'characteristics and building the characteristic schools are considered to be the important approaches and the effective methods of overcoming the consubstantial trend and promoting the students'overall development. The text begins with the evolution of the definition of the characterictic schools, the profound feature of the characterisitc schools and the clarification of some confusing concepts. The author bases its thoughts on the significance of promoting the characteristic schools in regional areas and practical demonstration. The author combines the practical exploration of the entire push of building the charaterisic schools in XiShan District, WuXi, Jiangsu. And then the author puts forward the basic principles, the basic strategies and the major practical measures. Besides, the author states and analyzes the value orientation, the evaluation criterion, the element design, the assessment standards sysmatically, hoping to give guidance to the construction of the characteristic schools.
