Reading is not only a most important way for us to get information, but is also an important approach to communicating with others. English reading teaching has always occupied a very important position in English teaching. In the 2010 Examination Syllabus for Jiangsu college entrance examinations, it is special emphasized that candidates should understand the logic of the context in English reading comprehension. However, the traditional teaching model mainly stresses on vocabulary and grammar and only stays at the sentence level.This thesis is intended to apply the theory of discourse analysis to English reading teaching in senior high school (based on Advance with English), and discuss how to improve students'discourse awareness and how to carry out English reading teaching better under the guidance of the theory of discourse analysis.The study is carried out by reviewing documents, designing questionnaires and doing experiments. The thesis first lists relevant theories about reading process, reading levels, reading modes, and discourse analysis in the literature review part. In addition, a questionnaire is designed to make clear the difficulties and obstacles that students met with when reading. Then the author tried to apply discourse analysis theory to teaching English reading in order to develop students'discourse awareness. In the experiment, discourse analysis theory was utilized in the experimental class while traditional lecturing method was adopted in the control class and finally the results of the experiment were compared and analyzed.The research results are as follows:Application of the theory of discourse analysis to English reading teaching in senior high school can make students grasp the context as a whole, understand the logic of the context and learn the clue of the context development. If students are sensitive to the structure of the context and fully understand it, they can find out the main idea of the context and each paragraph as well as the important details faster and more accurately. In this way, students'reading speed and accuracy can be improved.
