The UEC (short for Unified Examination Certificate) examination for the Malaysian Chinese independent schools is an important benchmark for the scholastic level of all the Malaysian Chinese independent schools at a national level. Its importance and representativeness is comparable to the NCEE of China, which is also a nation-wide examination. Since the students taking both examinations are all educated in mandarin, comparing the Chinese Language Paper of both examinations is indicative of how well both examinations test their recipients.Basing on the 2009 papers of both examinations, this thesis compares the two papers by measuring quantitatively the four language aptitude levels: language knowledge, comprehension, appreciation and expression that are tested in these two papers. The comparisons lead to suggestions for improvement of the two papers. This paper concludes that, although the two papers are structured differently, the fundamental content is similar. The NCEE paper of China is superior in stability and practicality, especially in the examination of language knowledge.
