"Head Start" was aiming at providing compensatory education for disadvantaged children with the purpose of achieving the goal of equal opportunities in education and poverty eradication. The program had a significant impact on the children, parents, teachers, curriculum and so on because of its comprehensive contents. Although there were some ups and downs, it continued until today depending on its great influence on the preschool development of the United States.This paper discussed the early development of the"Head Start"in the decade from 1964 to 1974 from a historical perspective. This paper described the development of"Head Start", analyzed the early influence of"Head Start", and evaluated the"Head Start. I hope this program could provide useful experiences and references for the development of our country's preschool. For the above, this paper is divided into three parts.The first part describes the historical background and conditions of generation of the "Head Start" .The second part studies the"Head Start"in the period of President Johnson and President Nixon and analyzed its main contents and development process.The third part evaluates the"Head Start"from various angles to receive an objective and fair understanding. Then try to find out the useful experiences of the pre-school education for our country.Different from the previous scholars who only focused on the"Head Start"itself to evaluate the program, this paper try to assess the"Head start"from multiple angles. And finally we know the fact that the" Head Start "does improve the living conditions of disadvantaged children of the United States and promote the development of the preschool education in the United States.
