As the development of the sensor and communication technology, wireless sensor network technology is getting more and more attention. Wireless sensor network is a multi-hop ad hoc network system Composed by large number of inexpensive miniature sensor nodes which deployed in the work area and communicate via wireless way. Wireless sensor network have a good prospect to be used in military and environment monitoring, space exploration, seismic and weather forecasting, agricultural production, medical and health care, construction and smart home, industrial production control, business, etc.Media Access Control (MAC) protocol is the underlying protocol for wireless sensor networks used for sensor nodes to share and use the communication media efficiently. MAC protocol is one of the main protocols to ensure effective communication of the network. MAC protocol has crucial impact in main properties of Wireless sensor network, such as throughput, data delay and energy consumption.Researchers have made a number of MAC protocols for different aspects of sensor network applications, based on competition and scheduling, which have different advantages and disadvantages. MAC protocol based on competition shows good performance in the low data flow rate and has good flexibility but will produce Conflict, which cause a lot waste of energy, While MAC protocol based on scheduling shows good performance in high data flow rate and avoiding conflict, but has poor flexibility. In this paper, a new hybrid MAC protocol is proposed based on deep study of existing MAC protocols. The new protocol combines the advantages of MAC protocol based on competition and scheduling which achieve a smooth transition and reduces energy consumption caused by mode conversion. This paper proposes a way to use idle frames effectively and solve the resource waste problem in TDMA protocol when the network load is low. The new protocol add in cross-layer method which can adaptively adjust themselves according to the network flow and achieve good performance in different network load.Simulation results show that the new protocol has shown good performance in different network load and have better performance than S-MAC and DEANA protocol in energy consumption, throughput and delay performance.
