The 21st century is said to be the century of ocean. Ocean is an important part ofEarth system. It is a very complex ecosystem, of which there are different spatial andtemporal scales and different levels of material existence and movement patterns.Ocean plays a very important role in the Earth's environment, for the globalpopulation, resource and environment problems to solve, people hope for marinedevelopment and utilization. However, ocean is now facing unprecedented pressure,such as excessive use of marine biological resources, pouring large quantities ofpollutants into the sea, man-made serious damage to the marine environment and soon.Researches on ocean have been carried out by many countries for a long time, sothere left many valuable documents and information. However, documents fromdifferent research institutions are often different from each other in the format,classification and presentation point of view, which affects the data sharing. And,although the current ocean observation data sharing has achieved a considerable level,the function of preventing marine environmental degradation is not ideal. Therefore,how to make the integration and utilization of these heterogeneous resources better iscrucial for scientific research, crisis management, government, aquaculturists andother marine agencies.Metadata provides a solution for the marine data sharing. Marine metadata canenhance the interoperability of information between agencies, make the discovery, useand sharing of the marine data easier. However, metadata lack of formal semantics,some of the research data and information has polysemy, synonyms, unclearterminology and so on, which metadata cannot understand and deal with well. It ishard to deal with these problems for computer, which brought a great challenge to themarine scientific knowledge sharing and information integrationOntology as a formal, explicit specification of a shared conceptualization captures the knowledge of related fields, and provides common understanding in the domain. Itcan represent concepts and the relationships among them. Semantic within ontologyhas advantages in many fields and has a wide range of applications, especially in theinformation retrieval. It is used to express the semantics of data sources, identify andestablish semantic relationship between concepts, solve the problem of semanticheterogeneity, make the data sharing and collaboration between the differentorganizations. In these applications, usually a lightweight ontology is sufficient..This research work has two parts. Firstly, we establish the ontology model ofMarine ecosystem by the full use of ontology, make a formal model of the coreconcepts, which make the marine concepts have clear and consistent formaldefinitions, facilitate the understanding and knowledge reasoning by the computer.Secondly, based on this ontology, a knowledge management system is developed,which provides a semantic base for the services of marine ecology.
