Main reducer is a key part of automobile driving system, whose quality is very important on the performance of the whole system. The quality of main reducer is mainly affected by the meshing performance of gears, which may be directly reflected by the gearing mesh mark. So the position, shape and size of gearing mesh mark are always important parameters to evaluate main reducer. Human vision is the traditional way to detect the gearing mesh mark but there is strong subjectivity, low precision and low efficiency. In order to make up for the deficiency of the human vision, a new method, based on machine vision and image processing, is used in this paper.Firstly, the forming mechanism and the normal influencing factors of gearing mesh mark are analyzed theoretically in the paper. Then, detailed description on several algorithms for image gray processing, such as sensitivity weight algorithm, monochromatic algorithm, intensity algorithm and adaptive algorithm, and for image smoothing processing, such as average filter, order statistic filter and low pass filter, are given, and the processing results of object image are listed and compared. Thirdly, the method of image segmentation with gray threshold, mathematics morphological image analysis is introduced; the mesh mark zone is shown; the dimension features and position features are calculated, such as area, eccentricity, centroid position rotation angle, etc. At last, the system of image acquisition and processing is suggested schematically.The mesh mark detection system is established on Laboratory Virtrument Instrument Engineering Workbench (LabVIEW) and Matrix Laboratory (Matlab), by calling the Self-bring Dynamic Link Library (DLL) of Microvision and image processing function of NI-IMAQ Vision. It's composed of modules of image acquisition, image enhancement, image segmentation, image feature extraction and quality evaluation. By comparing images based on human vision and the system, the accuracy and efficiency are verified.The mesh mark detection system may be used as a part of the quality evaluation system of main reducer assembly. Those dimension features and position features are the important indicators of the meshing performance. The application of this system will improve the assembly process, assuring the product quality. It is also in favor of reducing products reworking rate and increasing production efficiency, thus reducing enterprise cost.
