A Comparative Study Of The Characteristics Of The Language Used In Chinese And Korean Newspaper Headlines

The research focuses on the differences and similarities of the language used in the headlines of Korean newspaper"DongA Daily"and its Chinese counterpart,"Xinmin Evening News"both on May 2010.Considerable differences were found in vocabulary, rhetoric and grammar in their headlines.As for vocabulary, Chinese one tend to use classical words, dialect, common sayings and have a much more clear tendency to use spoken language such as dialectual words; However, a great number of transliterations, new words as well as new meaning of words and indigenous words are often used in its Korean counterpart.As for grammar, both samples use a lot of sentenses in present tense omitted sentenses and punctuation marks. Korean ones tend to list words and phrases, use fewer auxiliaries, and are lack of suffixes etc..The headlines in"Xinmin Evening News", however, mostly use SP sentenses or non-SP verb sentenses structure. Furthermore, they tend to use classical verbs or verb phrases as predicate.As for rhetoric methods, the two countries share much more in common. However, There is still difference in the frequency of the rhetoric using due to different language and culture background, as well as different social law and opening degree to the world.This paper also analyses the problems that may arise when using newspaper headlines as teaching material for teaching Chinese as a foreign language, and makes concrete suggestions on how to use language of newspaper headlines as teaching material.
