| Today, a multitude of information is available online. However, finding suitable information for a particular purpose is increasingly problematic. Recent work has indicated that faceted metadata can enable efficient navigation and search of web sites information. The faceted metadata is a systematic approach to designing information architecture for web sites. It integrates navigation and search in a flexible faceted classification manner that helps users find things quickly and browse items comfortably. The purpose of this thesis is to introduce and implement this approach to designing a faceted search system for web sites consisting of large metadata collections of Classic Courses. This survey-based implementation was designed underling case study, user questionnaire and guidelines of website information architecture. It also presented justifications for the approach in the form of usability test results and real-world application of the ideas. The main objective of the case study and the user questionnaire survey is to take advantage of the multiple faceted hierarchical structure and hierarchical faceted metadata in a systematic way. Then to specify how to organize..this metadata to reflect the information structure, and how to apply this method that flexibly responds to requirements in user's information seeking patterns of facet combination while at the same time retains consistency in the views of the information structure. The design and implementation of the faceted structure, database, and user interface is according to the requirement of users. Which is consisted of optimization the search experience of seek process and expectations of the retrieval function. The achievement of this faceted system is developed by a popular development platform which is called J2EE.After the implementation of the system, a usability test was actualized to estimate the retrieval efficiency and user experience of the faceted search, simple search, and advanced search, which is basing on several different search tasks. Preliminary test results showed that the faceted search and its interface is easy to understand and use. Some search functions has a positive effect on the retrieval process. Users have understood the faceted metadata and their relationship to a certain extent. The results indicate that a faceted metadata-based interface with dynamically generated query previews can be an effective interface for navigating and searching large collections of loosely linked information. We also find that users state an interest in using different search interface types to support different search strategies. The conclusion is that, for a coherent collection of information, the use of faceted metadata both to formulate the query previews and to navigate intermediate results is a promising avenue for the design of search interfaces, and superior to standard keyword-based search paired with lists of results. |
