Active contour model is a new method of image segmentation, brought forward in recent years, which can extract the contour exactly no matter what the shape is. It has the advantages of strong noise suppression and good performance that give it high practical value in the field of image processing.Snake model based parameter active contour model is a kind of active contour model. It defines an energy-minimizing curve, which moves to the energy minimum state actively under the function of the internal and external forces. However, the traditional Snake model has certain shortages, such as more sensitive to initial contour and the incapability of moving to the deep boundary. To improve the shortages of the traditional Snake, a novel model which adds a balloon force to the external force is put forward. New model improves the closed edge detection quality in a certain sense. The content includes:1. To study on the principle and the numerical implementation of active contour model.2. To study on the theory and numerical implementation of Balloon model in order to improve the shortages of the traditional Snake,.3. To realize the behavior of the traditional and new model using MATLAB code, and to analyze and compare the performance of the two models.The experimental results show that the new model improves the shortages of the traditional model and bring better dynamic behavior ability and stronger practical values.
