Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), are composd of a large amount of resource-constrained sensor nodes, which have the functions of information collection, processing and transmission. All these nodes form an application-specific network by the way of self-organization.6LoWPAN working group makes the efforts to develop ways to make the IPv6protocol running on top of IEEE802.15.4devices. Also it suggests adaptation layer technology and header compression technology to solve the problem that the two protocols are not compatible. In addition, for the architectures of6LoWPAN routing protocol, the working group proposes two ideas, Mesh Under and Route Over. Mesh Under routing process is finished in the data link layer, which is just a simple packet forwarding mechannism at second floor, only suitable for small scale sensor networks. While, how to implement the Route Over routing at the network layer to support large scale sensor networks is a key question in recent years. In this paper, firstly, the technical details of6LoWPAN modules were deeply researched, including the long packet fragmentation function, packet forwarding mechanism of Mesh Under and adapatation for the high-level layer's data type. What's more, IPv6and UDP header compression techniques are also researched. After that we implement the protocol and analyzed the performance of the functional modules from storage overhead, energy consumption overhead, packet loss rate and average delay. Further more, we analyze the existing routing protocols, such as LOAD, DYMO-low, HiLow and RPL. Based on all these works above, we propose an IP-Based micro sensor routing protocol (IPMSRP) for IPv6wireless sensor networs, and describe the main ideas of its design, message format and routing topology building process in detail.Subsequently, IPMSRP is implemented in micro sensor node MSRP6680, which is a platform designed by our lab. The functions of IPMSRP are verified and analyzed by building an indoor test environment. We verify the process of joining in a network, the routing topology building process, the packet forwarding process in the network layer and the routing repair mechanism. The results indicate IPMSRP routing protocol can be normally and stablely operated in a simple network environment. At last we summary the thesis and give out the work in the future.
