Relationship Between TMT Characteristics And Technology Innovatio

With the development of economic globalization, market competition becomes more and more severity. Chinese corporations have already realized technology innovation is the key factor for their long term development strategy so as to keep rapid growth in market competition. The technology innovation activities and influential factors have attracted attention from academics and practitioners. As one significant strategy, technology innovation investment must be influenced by TMT value, cognition, and so on.This research empirically examines the influential mechanism of TMT demographic characteristics on technology innovation investment based on an attention-based view. It collects the data from 110 listed Chinese pharmaceutical corporations in 2008 and 2009. On the basis of attention-based view, it explores the attention model in various TMT demographic characteristics and social roles, and then internal mechanism between TMT characteristics and innovation input. The results show that TMT focus more on general environment than task environment in pharmaceutical industry. Furthermore, the demographic characteristics and social roles of TMT can affect their attention distribution, and TMT's attention model affects technology innovation investment. The results indicate TMT's demographic characteristics and social roles affect their attention model, which opens the black box between TMT's demographic characteristics and organization activities, and explains how TMT characteristics affect strategy decision clearly. The empirical results contribute to expand and enrich upper echelons theory.On the basis of research results, it puts forward several practical suggestions. Corporations should get understand the required environment for technology innovation, pay attention to TMT structure, and encourage them to accumulate social connection in order to expedite technology innovation.
