Order Gymnodinilaes and genus Protoperidinium are importantcomponents of unarmored and armored dinoflagellates, respectively, theyare also the important bloom species of China, the research on them is thekey in dinoflagellates taxonomy. However, many factors arrested thedevelopment of taxonomy of order Gymnodinilaes and genusProtoperidinium, such as exceedingly delicate and sensitive to conditionschange of Gymnodinilaes species and the extreme diversity ofProtoperidinium species. Besides, the literature about morphologicaldescription and the pictures on identification of Gymnodinilaes andProtoperidinium species are scared. As a result, the taxonomic study ofGymnodiniales and Protoperidinium on the coasts of China is veryimportant.water and net samples were collected mainly from Chinese offshoreinvestigation on phytoplankton carried by The First Institute ofOceanography, SOA in recent years, analysis was conducted to unfixedand fixed samples directly or after treated with theca dissociation anddyeing under a microscope, with the classic taxonomic references and thelatest taxonomic system by Algaebase being considered, identifications to Order Gymnodinilaes and genus Protoperidinium species were carriedout with the traditional morphological classification method.25speciesof Gymnodiniales and26species belongs to Protoperidinium werepreliminarily identified, morphological description and key foridentification of each species was given in detail. We also determined thatthis25Gymnodiniales species belonging to15genera of5families,6ofthem were recorded for the first time in China, they are Pronoctilucarostrata, Amphidinium crassum, Cochlodinium brandtii, Cochlodiniumfulvescens, Torodinium robustum and Warnowia violescens; the Chinesenames of13species of Gymnodiniales were clarified and detailedprinciples for nomenclature of Chinese names were proposed;3pair ofspecies belongs to Protoperidinium were actually separate species but notsynonyms, they are P. oceanicum and P. murry,P. tumidum and P.fatulipes, P. globules and P. majus;P. diabolum and Peridinium globosumshould be the same species; P. quinquecorne should be transferred togenus Peridinium, and named Peridinium quinquecorne; the taxonomicrelationship between P. diabolum and P. longipes, P. obtusum and P.leonis,P. punctulatum and P. subinerme, the taxonomic status of P. bipesrequire further study.
