The velocity information in the fluid is the basic parameter acquired in thehydraulic experiment, however, the traditional movement measurement techniquegenerally can only measure fixed point of flow field. When measurement oftwo-dimensional velocity distribution is needed, fixed contact point measuringinsruments cannot fulfill measuring requirement. The technology of Particle ImageVelocimetry has been rapidly developed in the past decade, which is becoming one ofthe dominant methods for measuring the velocity information of experimentalhydrodynamics. As a tool for measuring the whole instaneous flow field, thetechnology of Particle Image Velocimetry has been extensively applied to automatedmeasurements of multiple flows and turbulence with reliable accuracy and providedan effective way to study velocity distribution of flow field for scientific researchers. Some project applications and advantages of measurement technique of PIV arereviewed briefly, development tendency of PIV are summarized in this paper. Many scholars have made a lot of research on PIV technique and applied thetechnique in the large-scale flow physical model successfully, nonetheless, we notethat people need to layout many cameras to complete the observation using verticalobservation method. We can complete the same observation, but layout fewer cameraswhen useing oblique photography. Based on flow visualization techniques, digitalimage processing techniques, according to the characteristics of tide simulation inphysical model of ocean bay, we design a system of measureing velocity in hydraulicexperiment of ocean bay using oblique photography. We test the method in a longcistern, the result of PIV measurement is applied to pave good basement for fieldexpriment.
