Objective Exploring the expression change of DCX in two sides’piriform cortexes of the adult guinea pigs followed by unilateral olfactory functional deprivation, proving olfactory functional activities have an effect on the expression, distribution, maturation of the immature neurons of the piriform cortexes. Methods The adult guinea pigs are divided randomly into3weeks group and6weeks group after establishing left olfactory functional deprivation model, the morphology and density of the neurons is detected by nissl staining, the expression change of the DCX, NeuN, PV, CB in two sides’piriform cortexes of the adult guinea pigs is detected by immunohistochemistry and the colocalizations of the DCX and NeuN are detected by immunofluorescence staining. Results The density and number of the neurons of the non-deprived side in the3w group and6w group is significant more than that of the deprived side; The DCX-positive cells in the piriform cortex of the3W’ non-deprived side are statistically significant more than that of the deprived side; The expression of DCX-positive cells in the two sides’ piriform cortexes of the6W group are the same as that of the3W group; The NeuN-positive cells in the piriform cortex of the3W’ non-deprived side are statistically significant less than that of the deprived side; The expression of NeuN-positive cells in the two sides’piriform cortexes of the6W are the same as that of the3W; The immunofluorescence staining shows the cells of colocalization between DCX and NeuN present in two sides’ piriform cortexes of the adult guinea pigs and there is no statistically significant difference. Conclusion Olfactory functional deprivation can down-regulate the expression of immature neurons; Olfactory functional deprivation can down-regulate the expression of inter-neurons.
