Photonic crystals (PhCs) have attracted great attention due to their distinguished abilities to control over light propagation and the rapid growth of nanomanufacturing technology. Because of small dimensions, low loss, high bandwidth and whole-silicon material, photonic circuits manufactured by photonic crystal hold great potentials for application in photonic integrated circuits. Self collimation effect discovered by H.Kosaka in1999allows diffractionless light propagation in perfect PCs without "physical" guiding boundaries.In this paper, we utilized the Plane Wave Expantion to calculate the dispersiton relations and equal frequency contours in photoni crystal, to find the self collimation frequency range. Based on the self collimation effect and light beam interference theory, three novel photonic circuits are proposed and demonstrated. The main research works and conclusions are as following11×3photonic drop splitters based on the self collimation ring resonator in a silicon photonic crystal. We obtain the equations of the transmission spectra of the1×3self-collimation ring resonator by utilizing the mutiple-beam interference, and discuss the conditions of being1×3photonic drop splitters and list different splitting ratios for1×3photonic drop splitters. The spectra are investigated by Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) simulation agree well with the theoritical spectra. Also we discuss the phase influence of beam splitters.21×2photonic drop splitters based on the self collimation ring resonator in a silicon photonic crystal.3Tunable drop filters based on photonic crystal self collimation ring resonators. By infiltrating with liquid crystal into the air hole of the SCRR, a kind of tunable drop filters are designed. Simulated by FDTD method, the transmission peaks will shift to lower frequencies when neff of the liquid crystal is increased.Innovation of this article:A kind of self collimation ring resonator (SCRR) are proposed utilizing the self collimation effect and multiple beam interference. Based on the SCRR we design photonic drop splitters (PDSs) and tunable drop filter (TDF). For PDSs, the predicted theoretical spectra agree well with the simulated spectra. Because of the small dimension, low power loss and high free frequency range, they would be applications in the photonic integrated circuits.
