Potential nest-nest evaluation is an effective way of recoverying endangeredspecies. Golden eagle is large raptor which is protected nationally. Golden eagleonce bred in National Nature Reserve of Xianrendong in Liaoning Province before1995, but after that, there were no breeding nest left in the reserve. We did researchon the habitat and potential nest using analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method, expert questionnaires and3S techniques in National Nature Reserve of Xianrendongduring February to May in2011, aiming at1) knowing the reason why golden eagleabandoned their breeding grounds;2) developing appropriate protection strategiesfor attracting golden eagle back. The main conclusions were listed as follows:1. Expert questionnaires were devised on the principle of AHP at the basis ofthe domestic and international golden eagles’ research. The weights of potentialnest-nest evaluation were determined by the expert questionnaires using yaahpsoftware statistics. Human disturbance and percentage of openness of core territoryplayed important parts.2. The habitat suitability was classified by saaty l-9level method. According tothe weights and geographic information system software analysis, score of potentialcliff nest was calculated. Potential nest was divided into five habitat types (highlysuitable, suitable, marginally suitable, less suitable, unsuitable). The results showedthat there were no highly suitable cliff and ten suitable cliffs in Xianrendong. Fourhighest HSI indexes among these suitable cliffs had the priorities to be trimmed, sothat it is more suitable for golden eagle.3. As to the advice of cliff nest experts, the conclusion of researching goldeneagle and present protective situation, and the reasonable policies and measures inaspect of golden eagle’ s conservation were proposed.
