Electronic maps are maps stored and accessed with the use of computer technology.Eighty percent of the information on human activities relates to geographic location andspatial distribution, as shown by authoritative research reports and statistics. Electronicmaps bear close relevance to various aspects of people’s daily life such as food,clothing, housing, transportation, learning and work. Nowadays, with the rapiddevelopment of cities and the accelerating pace of daily life, people need moreaccurate and detailed knowledge of such information than ever before.In this context, based on the theoretical and technical principles of thegeographical information system (GIS), the thesis selects geographical names, namesof roads, enterprises and institutions, public transit, driving direction, specialtiesand people’s other concerns as the object of study and NET2.0as its developmentplatform, researches into the design and implementation of digital maps fromacquiring data to answering the user query and, successfully designs and implementsthe electronic map of Kunming city. The thesis follows the line below:1.With the study of GIS software, the approach to GIS data acquisition, the datamanagement model and the GIS implementation technology, the thesis proposes thesatellite-image-based spatial data collection method and designs the document-basedhybrid approach to storage of spatial data and attribute data.2.The thesis studies the information on city electronic maps that are of interest tothe public, proposes a scheme for geographic feature classification and coding and,designs related classes for each class of elements.3.The thesis realizes the query function of the electronic map in the NETenvironment by making such practical functions as feature attribute query,related classquery, fuzzy place name query and public transportation query available and,provides such basic functions as dragging the map, zooming in and zooming out.4.The thesis designs a brand new software specialized for map query and display,removing the reliance on IE,360and other browsers; users can download from thewebsite for free. Boasting of rich content and detailed information, the software can be conveniently used without accessing the Internet; with its help, users can easily findtourist attractions, commercial districts, local snacks and ethnic specialties inKunming. It facilitates the dissemination of commercial information, bringing aboutmutual benefits to businesses and users. The software enables the design of variousspecialized maps such as bank maps, school maps, hotel maps and diving directions(including auto4S shops of various brand, gas stations, parking lots, car washes,auto repair shops, one-way streets and no-left turns).
