With the rapid development of science and technology, cross-media color transmission and reproduction is becoming more common. The Commission Internationale de I’Eclairage (CIE) has recommended the color appearance model of CIECAM02to solve this issue. In order to make better use of CIECAM02in the related applications, the performances of cross-media color reproduction with three surround parameters, i.e. dark, dim, average, and across different color temperatures were investigated, respectively, based on the psychophysical experiments in this thesis. Hereby, this study is important for the effective application and optimized development of CIECAM02.The visual evaluation experiment of color reproduction were carried out under the three corresponding ambient lighting conditions of Dark, Dim, and Average between the printed hardcopy color samples viewed in a standard illumination cabinet and the reproduced softcopy samples presented on a self-luminous liquid crystal display. The psychophysical methods of memory matching and pair comparison were employed in the visual assessments. The detailed analysis of the experimental data indicated that the color samples reproduced by using the surround parameter of ’dim’ always performed well under all the three lighting conditions, while the reproduction performance by the parameters of ’dark’ and ’average’ were dependent, in some extent, upon the lightness and chroma of the colors. The color samples with lower lightness worked well when they were reproduced by the parameter of ’dark’ and viewed under Dark condition, but they performed poor when being viewed in Average condition and reproduced using the parameter of ’average’. As for the relatively lighter color, their reproduction performances were not significantly different for the cases of either ’dark’ or ’average’ surround parameter and illuminated under the corresponding lighting conditions.Based on the psychophysical techniques of memory matching and categorical judgment, the cross-media color reproduction performances of CIECAM02were visually estimated across color medium with different color temperatures. The experimental data indicated that, for all pairs of color temperatures, the color reproduction always performed best when its original lighting source was D65, followed by the lighting source of A, with TL84being the poorest. Meanwhile, the performance of the color appearance model under the illumination of A and TL84showed high variability due to the spectral power distributions of these two lighting sources. The closer the color temperatures of original and target lighting sources were, the better their color reproduction effects would be; otherwise, the reproduction would be worse. Furthermore, the trend of experimental phenomenon was summarized, for instance, the reproduction of the neutral colors and bluish colors performed poor while the high chroma colors always performed well which was due to the over predicted colorfulness and chroma on neutral color by CIECAM02, its chromatic adaptation transformation, and memory colors, respectively. Finally, on the basis of summarizing the research work of this thesis, the perspectives of the future study were also forecasted.
