Wear is the main reason for cutting tool failure and usually occurs on tool surface.Nowadays, laser surface strengthening technology is the main method for the HSS cutting tools. The bionic technology is applied to improve wear resistance. Combined with bionic technologyand laser surface strengthening technology, the bionic non-smooth surface on the HSS cutting toolwas applied to improve tool wear-resisting performance and extend cutting tool life. The effects ofnon-smooth surface on HSS cutting tool wear resistance were studied in this paper.A new method combined bionic technology and laser surface strengthening technology wasproposed on cutting tool surface. The style of bionic non-smooth surface was designed and theinfluences of the laser machining parameters on bionic element were studied. Experimental resultsshow that laser power and pulse width increase with the diameter of element. The speed of lasermovement could change the distance between elements. The hardness near element increases withelement diameter. The friction and wear test on non-smooth surface were carried out and the non-smooth surfacewear mechanism was analyzed. Experimental results show that the bionic non-smooth surfacecould significantly improve wear resistance. The lower the friction force and friction coefficienthave, the lower wear exists. Cutting model was established with DEFORM software. Theinfluences of the line spacing and diameter on tool wear, cutting temperature and cutting stresswere studied through orthogonal simulation test. The simulation results show that the ranking ofinfluence parameters on tool wear are line spacing, pit diameter and column spacing. Thenon-smooth surface cutting tool has the lower cutting force, lower cutting temperature, lowercutting stress and lower wear than the smooth cutting tool. The non-smooth surface was producedon the rake and flank surface by laser and the contrast cutting experiment of45steel was carriedout. The results show that the bionic non-smooth surface cutting tool had the better wear resistantthan smooth surface one.
