Mesophase pitches (MPs) with different anisotropic content were synthetized by heat-treatment from A#spinning pitch, which was a commercial petroleum pitch. Mesophase-pitch-based activited carbon (MP-AC) with high specific surface was prepared by KOH activation, and effects of process conditions on preparation of mesophase pitch and process parameters on mesophase-pitch-based activited carbon such as anisolropic content, KOH/MP, carbonization temperature, pickling technology and so on were investigated. The microstructures of the products were studied by thermal analysis (TG-DTA), polarization microscope andN2adsorption. The main results are as follows:(1) The results indicated that mesophase pitch with purity of86.6%was obtained at two steps, while mesophase pitch with purity of91.8%was obtained at one step under the same condition. What’s more, the large domain texture mesophase pitch with purity of100%was obtained at the condensation temperature of410℃for6.5h.(2) The effect of anisotropic content on surface area of mesophase-pitch-based activited carbon was limited. The mesophase-pitch-based activited carbon with high specific surface area of2070m2/g was obtained at800℃for60min when KOH/MP was6:1.
