In recent years, with the improvement of people’s living standards, eutrophication is getting worse. Impact of planktons, like algae and their metabolic pollutants has been great concerned in the industry. In terms of characteristics of algae pollution, and the restrictions of acidic pH of electro-Fenton, a technique of bipolar similar electro-Fenton is proposed for treatment of single celled marine algae and their metabolic pollutants in neutral pH of raw seawater. During the study, using Chlorella and salt algae as the representative algae, the inactivation performance and the effect of pollutants removal is studied in different anode conditions. Combine the analysis of characteristics of generated intermediates of different operating conditions, the mechanism of inactivation of algae cells and removal of metabolic pollutants by similar electro-Fenton technology is clarified. The results of this study showed that: in studied pH conditions, the similar Electro-Fenton technology not only has higher effect on inactivation to algal cells, but has high removal effection to metabolites and other pollutants, In other words it can break through the restriction of traditional pH conditions and extend the scope of Electro-Fenton technology. When the anode is iron, the efficiency of inactivation and removal of algae and pollutants increases with the increase of voltage. Under appropriate conditions, the inactivation efficiency of the algae is 97.9%, and the removal efficiency of pollutants is 98.5%. When the anode is tin-antimony or niobium-tantalum composite, the effect of inactivation removal of algae and pollutants is higher too. Under the experimental conditions, the role of the similar Electro-Fenton technology on the inactivation and removal of algae and pollutants is the synergistic and coupling of multi-roles. There includes not only the strong oxidation of the hydroxyl radical, but also includes electrolysis catalytic oxidation and electrolytic flocculation and electro coagulation adsorption.
