Wood-based panels have been largely produced and consumed in China every year, pyrolysis is a promising method to recycle and reuse waste wood-based panels while UF resin contained in wood-based panels would make their pyrolysis process different from common biomass. The influence of UF resin on pyrolysis characteristics of wood-based panels and the transformation of nitric components had been focused on in this work. Pyrolysis characteristics and mechanism of wood-based panels were studied by TG-FTIR and pyrolysis experiments were carried out in the static bed reactor. The influence of UF resin was then analyzed through pyrolysis process together with the elemental tests of solid products and components tests of liquids by GC-MS off-line. The fungicidal value of pyrolysis liquids was tested by the inhibition of brown rot and white rot fungi finally.TG and DTG results show that the pyrolysis process of wood-based panels is much similar to that of solid wood with three stages. The weight loss rate of wood-based panels is higher that of wood in the earlier stage however lower in the second and third stage. The solid residue yield of wood-based panels in TG and char yield in pyrolysis experiments are both higher than that of wood. The heating rate and releasing gas yield of wood-based panels are higher than that of wood, combined with the higher activation energy of wood-based panels it is indicated that UF resin is much likely to accelerate the degradation rate of wood-based panels while reduce the conversion efficiency in terms of the whole process. The yield of CO released from wood-based panels was higher than that of wood in the early stage because of the presence of UF resin however the influence of UF resin on CO2could be neglected. The UF resin could make nitric gases of wood-based panels release earlier than that of wood with higher relative intensity in the temperature between180and320℃. Elemental analysis suggests that the influence of UF resin on hydrogen is most obvious while no significant difference could be found in oxygen despite that the loss of oxygen is the most critical one in the char. Pyrolysis liquids of particleboards contain high amount of oxygenated and heterocyclic compounds. Nitrogen-containing compounds and ketones in the pyrolysis liquids are mostly influenced by UF resin while the influence of UF resin on phenols, aldehydes and esters is not significant. UF resin is likely to interact mainly with lignin constituent during the pyrolysis process. Pyrolysis liquids of wood-based panels and wood both show good inhibition to the fungi while UF resin has a total inhibition to both white rot and brown rot fungi. The inhibition effect of pyrolysis liquids from wood-based panels could enhance by the UF resin so as to have great potentials to serve as a kind of component of preservatives.
