Beijing is the political, economical and cultural center of China with a hugepopulation. As the rapid development of society and economy, a great many problemsof environment come about. Heavy metals are a kind of persistent inorganic pollutants, and nowadays more attention is paying to its pollution and its harm to the humanhealth. Because the quality of soil is closely related to the human health, it is veryimportant and meaningful to do research on the concentration of heavy metals andassessment of soil quality in Capital Steel Factory of Beijing.Heavy metal concentration of Fe、Cr、Ni、V、As、Cd、Pb、Cu、Zn、Hg wereinvestigated for400topsoil samples and10typical soil profiles collected from CapitalSteel Factory. The cluster analysis and the principal components results showed thatthe heavy metals can be mainly divided into four groups. The first group indicatedthat the concentrations of Ni、V、As were primarily controlled by natural sources suchas soil parent materials, with their mean concentrations lower than the naturebackground values. The second group showed the concentratio ns of Cd、Cu、Pb、Znwere derived from the anthropogenic sources, particularly traffic and smelter, withtheir mean concentrations exceeded the nature background values. The PI resultsshowed that the samples were low contaminated by Cu、Pb、Zn and were middlecontaminated by Cd while the hotspots located in residential area. The third groupwere Fe and Cr, which were mainly affected by natural sources and anthropogenicsources and the high concentrations located in industrial area and partial residentialarea. The forth group was Hg, making by the features of non-point sources associatedwith human activities, and the high concentrations located in river area. Typical soilprofiles shows that heavy metals only accumulate in topsoil and deep soil are clear innature soil profile, while heavy metals accumulate in landfill layer dramatically inanthropogenic disturbed profile. In general, part of the studied area the topsoil and deep soil have beencontaminated by the heavy metals and more attention should be paid to the subsequent environmental damage and potential human health risk. The present study hasreference significances for soil pollution risk assessment and land use planning inCapital Steel Factory.
