Diarylethenes (DAE), which have excellent thermal stabilities of both isomers and low photo-fatigue, have drawn much attention due to their potential application in optoectronic devices, such as optical memories and optical switches. The photochromic metal complexes with diarylethenes ligands have got much attention in the field of coordination chemistry and material science for their functional research. The nature of electron transfer and the special redox characteristics of metal would enrich the control measures of photochromic diarylethenes and endow them with unique properties such as electrochemical properties, magnetic properties and fluorescence properties. On the other hand, by means of introducing diarylethenes into metal compounds, the physical and chemical properties of the metal compounds would be adjusted.Fe-S clusters are widely found in the life as the active sites of many proteases, which could complete biological reactions through cooperative actions of many clusters or multi-metallic centers of one cluster under mild conditions. Fe-S clusters have a lot of potential applications, such as superconducting materials, photoelectric materials, magnetic materials and catalyst synthesis and application.This thesis describes the synthesis and photochromic activties of novel diarylethenes containing Fe-S clusters. The detailed contents are as follows:(1) Seven new diarylethene-maleimide derivatives [BTE-linker-COOH; BTE2,3-bis(2,5-dimethylthiophene)maleimide;4a, linker=CH2;4b, linker=(CH2)3;4c, linker p-C6H4CH2;4d, linker=P-C6H4;4e, linker=p-C6H4CH=CH;4f, linker=p-C6H4CH2CH2;4g, linker=(l,5)-CioH6], were synthesized. Their UV-Vis absorption spectra in dichloromethane were studied. The results indicate that the compounds4a-4g have showed fine photochromic behaviors in dichloromethane.(2) Seven novel photochromic dithienylethenes containing Fe-S clusters [Cp Fe(μ-SEt)2^-O2C-linker-BTE)FeCp*][PF6][Cp*=η5-C5Me5; BTE-2,3-bis(2,5-dimethylthiophene) maleimide;5a, linker=CH2;5b, linker=(CH2)3;5c, linker=P-C6H5CH2,5d, linker=p-C6H5;5e, linker=p-C6H4CH=CH;5f, linker=p-C6H4CH2CH2;5g, linker=(l,5)-C10H6], were synthesized and spectroscopically characterized. The solid state structures of5c and5d were further determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The UV-Vis absorption spectra of5a-5g in dichloromethane were studied. The results indicate that the compounds5a-5g have showed photochromic behaviors in dichloromethane, while their photochromic behaviors in dichloromethane are weak.
