Friction welding is an advanced process technique, which has some characteristics, suchas high quality, precision, high efficiency, economizing on energy. The radial friction weldingas a new friction welding process, which use the radial pressure to achieve axial weldingprocess. As one of the friction welding, the radial friction welding process is a thermalinteraction much more complex process, Traditional focus on the development of the frictionwelding process commonly use empirical trial and error method, this method costs the hugedevelopment and long life cycle. In order to reduce costs and shorten the research cycle, thenumerical simulation combining a small amount of test to explore the radial friction weldingprocess, which include temperature field, stress field variation and the load of the form of aforce curve.Applying ABAQUS software, based on explicit analysis, A3D FE model coupled withthermo-mechanicale of radial friction lap welding joint was established with45steel. Usingthe Johnson-cook constitutive model, it subject to large strains, high strain rates and hightemperatures. Thermal properties, friction coefficient changing with temperature and plasticdeformation heat were also considered, The reason of temperature field distribution and thedeviation of loading pressure was predicted and analyzed. The results show that withoutconsidering the heat transfer of the radial ring and the fixture, the radial ring is formed tofixture as the center to form an elliptical temperature gradient distribution and to fixture voidas the center to form an strip temperature gradient distribution the maximum temperaturereached1220degrees and1050degrees. In the stable friction stage, the pressure stress field ismainly in the center of the fixture, the flash forms tensile stress. The most notable feature isthe formation of the center of high pressure stress with the second high pressure zone and theoutermost tensile stress zone.A continuous curve of the load force in accordance with the above characteristics. Inorder to simplify the process of welding process, the curve fit into three sections pressurecurve, re-substituted into the model to repeated amendments to calculate the interfacetemperature field and radial ring deformation in good agreement with the welding process. This study for the follow-up to the same material in different sizes’ ring finite elementmodel provide a basis. Follow-up radial friction welding of dissimilar materials have greatreference value.
