A novel initiator9,9’-bis xanthenes-9,9’-diol (BIXAN) wassynthesized by the reductive coupling of xanthone. The miniemulsionpolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) initiated by BIXAN wascarried out. The effects of concentrations of trimethylpropane triacrylate(TMPTA), monomer, initiator, and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), andtemperature on monomer conversion, particle size, size distribution andparticle surface morphology were studied. The results showed thatregular spheric latexes with good monodispersity and stable emulsionwere obtained when the concentration of TMPTA was2%,20%formonomer,1%for initiator,9mmol/L for SDS at70℃.Miniemulsion and conventional emulsion of MMA initiated byazobis-(isobutyronitrile)(AIBN) and ammonium persulfate (APS) werecarried out respectively. By grafting BIXAN onto PMMA particlesurface, PMMA/PBA core-shell emulsion polymerization was studied. The results showed that interpenetrating polymer networks weresynthesized. Conventional core-shell emulsion polymerization of PMMA/PBAinitiated by AIBN and APS were carried out at70℃. The effects of SDSaddition and polymerization process on particles and core-shell structurewere studied. The results showed that PMMA/PBA core-shell particleswith monodispersity were prepared with3%of SDS addition based onbutyl acrylate (BA) mass.
